Health

Gambian woman and child.

Like Education, Health is equally important to The Architect and Founder of Jammeh Foundation For Peace, His Excellency the President of the Republic of The Gambia, Dr. Alhaji Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh. His desire is to see genuine peace prevail all over the world and The Gambia in particular. Based on his belief that genuine peace is only attainable where there is social justice and his absolute conviction that “… the Health of the People is the Foundation upon which the survival and development of any Nation depends …”. As a cardinal pillar of The Foundation’s establishment, the Health component is meant to complement government’s resolve in mitigating the high morbidity and mortality rate among Gambian children in particular and healthcare in general.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES/ PROGRAMMES

1. DEVELOP THE JAMMEH FOUNDATON HOSPITAL

The great concern and care attached to this important sector of The Gambia’s National Development Agenda by JFP’s Founder, His Excellency President Jammeh, triggered his acceptance, adoption and establishment of the JFP Hospital, formerly Bundung Health Post, which is now being developed into a full fledge Mother-Child Hospital. Whilst Government ensures the development of good public health services, the Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital, as a non-governmental health facility, aims to complement Government’s efforts in this sector. The President’s adoption of this health post is equally buttressed by his knowledge and awareness of the needs of the large urban poor in the Greater Banjul Area and the large concentration of the population in the Serekunda area and Bundung in particular.

The Jammeh Foundation for Peace Hospital (JFPH) commenced work in the year 2000 providing essential health services to a large population. The commencement of outpatient services at the Jammeh Foundation Hospital brought significant reduction in the outpatient pressure at both Serekunda and Faji Kunda health centres.

2. SUPPORT TO OTHER HEALTH FACILITIES AND INITIATIVES

In line with its aims and objectives, The Foundation continues to give material, financial and moral support to many health facilities and programmes countrywide. Some of materials donated to health facilities includes: hospital beds, wheelchairs, commodes, trolleys, bed sheets, operating theatre tools & equipment, walking aids, elevators, furniture, etc. This has prompted many remote and less fortunate health posts to write to The Foundation for assistance. For instance, there are various communities that have sent in proposals to the JFP office requesting support for their own initiatives in healthcare and sanitation. These requests and initiatives are within the objectives of The Foundation and with little support a lot can be achieved.

The first large distribution exercise was carried out during His Excellency The President’s Meet the People Tour in 2003 when he provided health related equipment to all corners of the country. Another handing over ceremony was presided over by Her Excellency The Vice President and Chairperson of the JFP Board of Directors in September 2003. Finally Her Excellency The First Lady and President of the Jammeh Foundation visited the JFP Hospital where once again resources were shared in abundance with other facilities. In total 50 health facilities have benefited so far.

This programme entirely depends on benevolent supporters in various parts of the world who provide their time energy and finances in order to provide these equipments for the Gambian people.

3. NEW YUNDUM HEALTH POST

The identification and sponsorship of this health project came as a result of President Jammeh’s supervision and inspection of communities during “Operation Clean The Nation” exercise on Saturday 15th May 2004. On arrival at New Yundum, The President was impressed with that communities’ turnout and commitment to his call. However, he was saddened by the sight of the dilapidated health post which was built in 1952. In that regard, the communities pleaded for assistance to upgrade the health trekking post to a dispensary bearing in mind the strategic location of the facility and the dense communities it serve. In response to that request, The President pledged D300, 000 (three hundred thousand dalasis) towards the construction of that facility through the Jammeh Foundation for Peace.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed for the implementation of the project. The signatories to the MOU include: Jammeh Foundation for Peace as Financier; The New Yundum Community providing land and unskilled labour; The Department of Technical Services as technical supervisors; The Department of State for Health and Social Welfare as service providers when the facility is completed; and the Engineering Squadron of The Gambia National Army providing skilled labour.

Saturday 29th May 2004, a foundation stone for a D300, 000 (three hundred thousand dalasis) health facility was laid in New Yundum by the Honourable Secretary of State for Health, Dr. Yankuba Kassama in his capacity as a JFP Board Member and Chairman of that Board’s Health Committee. The facility will house the bi-weekly clinic for children and pregnant women and also provide a labour unit for the women of the village.
